What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC's programme to move the UK tax system online. Instead of filing a single annual return, businesses and sole traders keep digital records throughout the year and submit updates quarterly.

MTD for VAT is already mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses. MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) starts April 2026 for sole traders and landlords earning above £50,000.

MTD for VAT

Mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses. Keep digital records; submit the return through HMRC or compatible software. InvoiceAdept exports the totals.

April 2026

MTD ITSA — income over £50,000

Sole traders and landlords with income above £50,000 must use MTD software and submit quarterly updates.

April 2027

MTD ITSA — income over £30,000

The threshold drops to £30,000, bringing more sole traders and landlords into the MTD regime.

Don't wait until the deadline

MTD for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) launches in phases: April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000, and April 2027 for those with income over £30,000. MTD for VAT is already mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses.
