Frequently asked questions

What are the current HMRC mileage rates?

For the 2026/27 tax year, HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rates are: Cars and vans — 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, then 25p per mile thereafter. Motorcycles — 24p per mile for all miles. Bicycles — 20p per mile for all miles. The car rate rose to 55p from April 2026, having been held at 45p since 2011.

What counts as business mileage?

Business mileage is travel you do in the course of your work — visiting clients, travelling between sites, attending meetings, or collecting supplies. Your regular commute from home to your usual workplace does not count as business mileage. If you work from home, travel to client premises or a temporary workplace can qualify. Keep a mileage log with dates, destinations, purposes, and distances to support your claim.

How do I claim mileage on my tax return?

Self-employed individuals claim mileage through their Self Assessment tax return under business expenses. You enter the total business miles and HMRC calculates the deduction using AMAP rates. Alternatively, you can claim actual vehicle costs (fuel, insurance, maintenance) and apply the business use percentage — whichever gives a higher deduction. Employees can claim the difference between any mileage allowance paid by their employer and the AMAP rate using a P87 form (or Self Assessment if applicable).
